Procedures for handling new (H1N1) influenza (8th announcement)

As has been reported in newspapers and other media, the number of influenza cases including the new type influenza (H1N1) continues to increase every day, and within our own school there have been many reports of infection, including group infectivity among those participating in club activities.

At the beginning of the second semester, we are asking all students to take measures to prevent the spread of infection, by taking the following precautions and responding calmly to the situation from a well-informed basis.

1. On coming to school
Those who are experiencing flu-like symptoms (such as fever, headache, coughing, sore throat, runny nose, achiness, or digestive problems such as nausea or diarrhea) are asked to stay home from school and to minimize their trips out of the home, and to telephone the nearest healthcare center to arrange for diagnostic tests. In the event of a positive diagnosis (or suspicion of infection), students will be required to stay home from classes, and asked to either call (03-5984-3726) or email (anzen@musashi.ac.jp) the university health clinic.

2. Precautions inside and outside of school
(1) People with chronic illnesses, those who have a medical condition that requires them to have regular checkups or medication, and pregnant women should exercise maximal caution to prevent infection and, in the event that they suspect they may have been infected, should contact a physician quickly to receive a diagnosis and treatment. Follow the physician’s instructions for taking medicines as appropriate.

Please consult with the Health Clinic for any questions regarding attendance.

(2) Those in charge of extracurricular activities (clubs, circles, etc.) and student activities should pay close attention to the health of all participants, especially those from outside of the school. In the event that multiple participants complain of symptoms, or of a suspicion of a group infection, contact the university health clinic immediately.

(3) Please take general protective measures against the flu inside and outside of school
    (1) Observe etiquette when coughing or sneezing by wearing a mask to prevent passing any infection
      to others.
    (2) Wash hands and gargle regularly. When it is not possible to wash hands, pocket alcohol wipes are also
      effective.
    (3) Live a balanced lifestyle with sufficient food, sleep, and rest, and avoid unnecessary and non-urgent
      trips.
    (4) Stock at least one week’s food, medicine and daily necessities at home.
    (5) It is recommended that you keep continuously up to date with the latest information on the new-type
      influenza (visit: http://www.musashi.ac.jp/modules/health_news/index.php?page=article&storyid=18).

(4) Do not come to school if someone you live with has been infected. Stay quarantined at home for four days, even if you show no signs of symptoms. On returning to classes, report to the health clinic as it is necessary to inquire about your treatment and recovery.

3. Future measures
Information will be updated as necessary. Check the university website everyday, and follow any instructions.

Depending on future outbreaks and spread of influenza within Japan, the university may be closed as a preventive measure. The university website will immediately be updated with all necessary information, so please confirm online.
